Shade is the little bat that could! If you like adventure and constant action, you'll enjoy this book. It's a quick read at only 205 pages, and Kenneth Oppel's writing style makes the time fly by as you get completely sucked in to Shade's world. Check out the other books in the trilogy, Sunwing, Firewing, and Darkwing (prequel to the series).

Karina dreads the time after dinner, when her stepfather, "The Daddy," comes home. He has an amazingly bad temper and often gives Karina and her sisters "beat-ups." Luckily, his job as a cab driver in New York City keeps him away most of the time. Karina sense of hopelessness is alleviated when she meets Rachel and experiences friendship for the first time. This book is suspenseful and has a very unexpected ending. Don't miss it!
